My friend Yaakov Nathan (our host here on the forum) asked me to post the following interesting information.
It is based on what is printed in Likutei Dibburim, a collection of talks delivered by the Frierdiker Rebbe in Latvia, Poland, and the U.S. during the years 1929-1950.
Pages 5704-5769 in the 4th volume of Likutei Dibburim are in a different size font than the rest, and include peculiar and oddly purposeful spacings between words and at the beginnings and end of various sections.
The page numbers in this section correspond to the years 1944-2009, and one will find wonderous hints in these pages to events of those years.
Just a few examples:
page 5710 (corresponding to 1950, the year of the histalkus (passing) of the Frierdiker Rebbe) begins with the word "nistalek" (passed away). It also includes the expressions "What are you counting on? On whom are you relying? Chassidim have to do their own work: everyone has to toil for himself." (These were exactly the Rebbe's sentiments during the year he refused to accept the Nesius and in his first sicha in 5711 when he finally did accept.)
page 5711 (corresponding to 1951, the year the Rebbe accepted the Nesius):
"there is an extension of Moshe in every generation".
page 5727 (corresponding to 1967, year of the miraculous victory in the 6-Day War, when the Arabs led by Nasser (yimach shmo) boasted of their intent to "drive the Jews into the sea", yet despite this the Rebbe confidently assured victory to the children and adults gathered at the Lag B'Omer parade, asserting that the victory is fueld especially by the Torah and Mitzvos of children (http://www.chabad.org/multimedia/mediap ... aid/132926)):
"Haman sought to 'destroy, kill, and eradicate all the Jews'...Mordecahi, recognizing that the destiny of Jewry and Judaism depended on the education of young children...invested all his might in gathering together little children and teaching them Torah. By virtue of this mesirus nefesh they were redeemed...this applies today."
page 5751 (corresponding to 1990-1, the year of the first Gulf War, and the year the Rebbe began announcing that (as per the midrash Yalkut Shimoni) "this is the year in which Melech Hamoshiach is revealed"):
"The world ran its course in darkness until Avraham came and began to radiate light...Divine providence chooses him to be the luminary...when the sun has to rise its light is obstructed by light clouds..."
page 5752 (corresponding to 1991-92, when the Rebbe's emphasis on Moshiach reached a fever pitch, which was interupted by the stroke of 27 Adar):
"Before the essential light of Chassidus was to be revealed, there was the Alter Rebbe's extreme distress...we chassidim should rejoice at the manifestation of light which we have been priveleged to enjoy...true, it was earned through suffering and self-sacrifice--but it happened...Why did this manifestation of light have to come about this way? [Begins to discuss the story of the Alter Rebbe stopping a boat miraculously and then asking the captain to stop the boat himself so he could recite kiddush levona (in a natural manner, without miracles)]
page 5753 (corresponding to 1992-93) when the Rebbe, from the balcony of 770, encouraged the singing of "Yechi Adoneinu" numerous times until a second stroke on 27 Adar (same date) brought him to Beth Israel hospital):
"Why did [the Alter Rebbe] have to ask the official [captain of the boat] for favors [if he could miraculously cause the boat to stop]? Because it must be garbed in the laws of nature...the inscrutable workings of He who is perfect in knowledge...[these matters] need to be understood in tabgible, intellectual terms...Just as someone might point at something and say 'this is it'...kashering the vessel."
page 5754 (corresponding to 1993-94, the year of Gimmel Tammuz, which to eyes of flesh appeared to be the Rebbe's passing):
"We tangibly observe that a spiritual state is an existent entity which occupies space even though our eyes don't perceive this; it must follow that a physically existent entity is in truth a spiritual entity, except that our eye does not manage to see the truth in everything."
page 5769 (corresponding to this year, 2008-09, is the final page in this section of Likkutei Dibburim, perhaps a hint to the final year of golus?):
This page discusses the Sukkah, how it is a combination of light and shade. Although light=revelation and shade=darkness, nonetheless they both have their source in the sun. "'Hashem hu HaElokim' utterly melts away all evil...bestowed from Above, it depends on the avodah (work) of the mortal recipient below...Two entities come together without any intermediary...do one's utmost to think good thoughts and happy thoughts...making vessels for G-dliness!"
